With the help of W-Trans, a transportation consulting firm, the Traffic Division is wrapping up and updating the Engineering and Traffic Surveys, or more commonly known as Speed Limits. Every 10 years, Public Works is required to collect traffic volumes and vehicle speeds on the streets in San Rafael with posted speed limits to see if they should be increased, decreased, or remain the same. This allows the Traffic Enforcement officers in the Police Department to issue tickets people they catch speeding. Many speed limits will remain the same, however the posted speeds will increase from 25 miles per hour (mph) to 30 mph on Redwood Highway from 4222 Redwood Highway to Freitas Parkway, and on Los Gamos from Lucas Valley Road to the dead-end.
