Art with a Purpose

Building Connection via Utility Box Art

Project Overview

"Art with a Purpose" is the  San Rafael Chamber Leadership Institute’s class of 2024 project that celebrates our community’s core values and our artistic community.  The San Rafael Leadership Institute is a nine-month program through the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce that exposes Marin's leaders to a variety of current issues, impactful organizations, and improved self awareness. As part of the program, each class completes a class project in the hopes of improving our community.

By installing art on existing infrastructure, we hope to add beauty to the mundane and inspire residents, job seekers, and employers and promote the Chamber of Commerce values such as sustainability, inclusivity, and equitable opportunities. The project was approved by the San Rafael Public Art Review Board and San Rafael City Council.

Local artists submitted their ideas to creatively interpret these values, focusing on the pillars of:

Community Resources
Disaster Preparedness
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion
Economic Vitality
Sustainability
Workforce Development

Thanks to the San Rafael Downtown BID for this May update which includes in progress photos.
