Canal Lighting Project Update

The City has been working hard with PG&E to get lights installed on locations identified from the Canal Community Based Transportation Plan. Last spring, City staff identified 42 locations where PG&E had existing poles, but no lights. In June 2022 PG&E met with the City about the project and the strong need to provide lighting to help residents feel safe. Over the last several months, PG&E has been working on the calculations to see if the City could simply just add a light to the existing poles or if pole modifications would be needed in order to add lighting. As PG&E started to review each location, the scope began to creep and standard PG&E upgrades were triggered throughout the Canal neighborhood. This simple job turned into a more extensive project than was originally anticipated during the June, 2022 meeting. As of November 2022, PG&E is working on the final agreements and scheduling with the City. PG&E will provide an updated schedule commitment to the city in the coming weeks.
