The City of San Rafael has officially proclaimed 2024 as its 150th Anniversary, celebrating its rich history, vibrant present, and exciting future. This milestone not only marks the city’s rich legacy but also commemorates the San Rafael Fire Department’s own 150th anniversary, recognizing the essential role public safety has played in the community’s growth and well-being.

The proclamation, approved by the City Council at its December 16, 2024 meeting, acknowledges San Rafael’s history as a region stewarded by the Coast Miwok peoples, its incorporation in 1874, and its growth into a city known for its cultural diversity, vibrant arts scene, commitment to sustainability, and spirit of public service and volunteerism.

“The 150th anniversary is a time for us to reflect on what makes San Rafael so special—our rich history, vibrant culture, and the diverse communities that have profoundly shaped our city’s identity and traditions,” said Mayor Kate Colin. “This milestone marks not only our past but the exciting future we’re building together.”

“As we mark San Rafael’s 150th anniversary, this is an opportunity to look back at our city’s history and reaffirm our commitments to economic growth, equity and inclusion, housing for all, and sustainability,” said City Manager Cristine Alilovich. “As we look to the future, we remain dedicated to ensuring our city is a welcoming home for all who live, work, and visit here.”

San Rafael’s anniversary celebration will include a series of community events throughout the year. For more information on the 150th Anniversary celebrations, visit https://www.cityofsanrafael.org/150-year-anniversary or follow us on social media.
