Downtown Library Renovation
About
Project Goals
- Modernization of the interior library spaces, updated HVAC, ADA improvements, and upgrades to the plumbing and electrical to meet code.
- Enhance the library with new interior features while preserving historical aspects of the Carnegie library.
Overview
The San Rafael Downtown Public Library was first opened on January 9, 1909. The original library was a historical Carnegie-funded library which was later expanded upon and modified significantly with a 1960 addition and a 1976 modification to enclose the parking garage to become useable library space. Additional requests for capacity increase and facility upgrades have been received from the public in the years since 1976. To address the growing community demand and need for more modern library facilities, the Downtown Library Renovation Project aims to include improvements to enhance functionality and usability of the facility for patrons and staff.
This Project is an interior renovation of the existing building, including new interior walls, doors, interior glazing, ceilings and finished, compliance with current life safety codes, installation of an interior lift, and modification to the building systems (HVAC, electrical, lighting, telecommunications, audiovisual, and plumbing).
