
As part of the beautiful new Multi-Use Pathway (MUP) from Rice to Andersen Drive, a HAWK signal was installed at the intersection of the MUP and Rice Drive. HAWK actually stands for High-intensity Activated crossWalK (hey, we are not responsible for the name!). It provides a controlled midblock crossing for bicyclists and pedestrians utilizing the newly-opened path. What differentiates a HAWK from a regular traffic signal is that the signal heads on a HAWK do not illuminate when not in use. Since this is the first HAWK in San Rafael, we thought we would share a useful graphic explaining how to navigate the crossing, both by car and by bike or foot:
