Did you know: California now requires all businesses that generate four or more cubic yards of commercial solid waste per week to enroll in services to collect organic waste separately from other waste. Four cubic yards is about the size of a small dumpster and organic waste includes food scraps, landscape trimmings, clean wood and lumber, and soiled cardboard and paper towels. Well, why did they pass the law and how can you comply? When organic waste is not sorted properly and sent to landfill, it rots and produces methane – a greenhouse gas 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Marin Sanitary Service has two programs available for businesses in San Rafael to help them comply, both of which are cheaper than comparable services for garbage collection.
