San Rafael, CA – This March, the City of San Rafael is supporting Vivalon’s March for Meals campaign, an initiative that addresses food insecurity among the City’s homebound elderly residents. The campaign began on March 1st with Councilmember Rachael Kertz and Vivalon teaming up to deliver meals and connect with homebound meal recipients.

Vivalon is a nonprofit based in San Rafael that connects older adults and people with disabilities to essential services to promote independence and dignity. Celebrating 70 years of service in 2024, Vivalon offers home-delivered meals, social activities, educational opportunities, and specialized transportation in Marin County, where nearly one in three residents is over 60.

Approximately 10% of the senior citizens in the community face food scarcity, with an additional 25% at risk of experiencing food shortages. The March for Meals campaign is Vivalon’s response to these challenges and aims to raise awareness about the food insecurity and the support Vivalon gives through delivery of over 155,000 meals and bags of groceries annually. These are delivered via home-delivered meals, a weekly food pantry, and the Vivalon Café.

The San Rafael community can support these efforts by donating, volunteering, and referring older adults in need to their programs.

To donate, call 415-456-9062 x4800 or send a check to Vivalon, 930 Tamalpais Avenue, San Rafael, CA 94901. To volunteer, please contact 415-456-9067 or visit vivalon.org/volunteer. Learn more about Vivalon at vivalon.org.

To further support its older adult residents, the City of San Rafael and Age-Friendly San Rafael held a celebration for residents aged 90 and above on Sunday, March 10th, at the San Rafael Community Center. You can learn more about upcoming age-friendly events and find additional information and resources at www.cityofsanrafael.org/departments/age-friendly/.
