San Rafael to Raise Pride Flag at City Hall on June 3

San Rafael, Calif. – The City of San Rafael will host the raising of the Pride Flag at City Hall on Monday, June 3, 2024, at 5:40 p.m. in celebration of LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. This event symbolizes the City’s commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all community members.

The month of June is recognized globally as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, in honor of the Stonewall Riots of June 1969 in New York City, a pivotal event in the LGBTQIA+ rights movement that galvanized individuals and communities to advocate for equality, justice, and human rights. It serves as an important opportunity to celebrate the progress made towards equality and inclusivity, to honor the contributions and achievements of LGBTQIA+ individuals in all fields of endeavor, and to acknowledge the ongoing struggles and challenges that the LGBTQIA+ community continues to face.

The flag raising event will take place on the steps of City Hall from 5:40 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The program will feature a welcome from Mayor Kate Colin and remarks from Rick Hess, Spahr Center interim executive director, highlighting the importance of LGBTQIA+ visibility and equality.

Following the flag-raising ceremony, the City Council will consider a proclamation during the City Council meeting, officially naming June 2024 as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month in San Rafael.

Mayor Kate expressed the significance of this event, stating, “Raising the Pride Flag at City Hall is a powerful statement of our solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community. It reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring that San Rafael is a place where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.”

We encourage everyone to join us for this special event and show their support for LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. Together, we can continue to build a community that embraces diversity and champions equality.
