Sidewalk Repair Program update

Posted on March 19, 2021

The Sidewalk Repair Program continues to be one of Public Works’ most popular programs when it comes to resident participation. Since the program first began accepting applications for the program in 2018, more than 500 properties in San Rafael have signed up to have their sidewalk replaced through it.

While neighborhoods have been thrilled at just how many property owners have already, or plan to, fix their sidewalk through the program – the higher-than-anticipated number of participating properties has meant that the program has moved much slower through San Rafael than originally anticipated. The City and contractor Van Midde & Son Concrete have opted to make sure that construction is performed at all participating properties within a neighborhood at once. This ensures the contactor can provide low cost rates taking advantage of economies of scale and geographically consolidated construction will minimize traffic control impacts to a neighborhood.

Construction for the program is currently continuing to make its way through the East San Rafael (Point San Pedro Peninsula) area.  We anticipate construction for this area to be completed during Summer 2021.

The anticipated schedule for other upcoming neighborhoods is as follows:

Dominican Neighborhood – Late 2021.

Downtown – 2022

North San Rafael/Terra Linda – 2023 & 2024
