Volunteer during a disaster

During emergency events, the City of San Rafael will occasionally open up a walk-in Emergency Volunteer Intake Center.

The Emergency Volunteer Intake Center (EVIC) is a designated location where disaster volunteers can prepare and coordinate volunteer efforts. If the EVIC is opened, we will update this page with more information.

At the center, volunteers will be interviewed to identify their:

  • Strengths
  • Interests
  • Resources
  • Specialized experience

Interviews help us pair volunteers to the best available volunteer openings.

A community is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm.

How to get involved

If you want to volunteer during a disaster or emergency, you can:

  1. Register your interest in advance by completing our volunteer application. Be sure to check the box agreeing to be contacted in case of emergency.
  2. During an emergency, check this webpage to know if our center has been opened. If you have registered in advance, we will contact you for support.
  3. Before an emergency, make sure you and your family are prepared for an emergency.

Location

Primary location

Canoles Hall, First Presbyterian Church
1510 Fifth Avenue, San Rafael

Secondary location (if needed)

Elks Club Lodge
1312 Mission Avenue, San Rafael

Staffing at these locations will depend on the severity and duration of the disaster. In some cases, we will operate virtually.

If there is a country-wide volunteer intake center, we may support that effort and have a different location.
